This Is What You Need To Know About Textile Sizing!

 Definition of Textile Sizing:

Applying different size solutions to paper or textile materials is known as Sizing. Sizing solution is applied to the surface of twisted yarn (cotton, linen, and polyester) during weaving in the textile industry to increase yarn strength and eliminate hairiness.

Some industries produce textile sizing chemicals like adhesives, softeners, binding agents, anti-mildew agents, anti-foaming, and wetting agent for sizing. They are all standard solutions.

To make the size solution, 15 percent of the sizing components are mixed with 85 percent water. The preparation of the solution is determined by the type of yarn and the weaving machine to be used. The primary issue with Sizing is that the actual hue of yarn might vary.

We will check out the definition of size, the purpose for which sizing is done, and the recent automatic process used in textile sizing these days. As you may know, Sizing is the process of coating yarn with various sizes of the solution to ensure the delivery of good quality yarn for weaving.

Now we will look at the purpose of textile sizing in this article.

These are the Purposes of Textile Sizing:

Sizing process involves the application of a size solution to the warp yarn surface simultaneously weaving warp yarns under high tension and abrasion. Different textile sizing chemicals work upon the textile. Sizing of textiles benefits us in the following ways listed below:

  • Sizing cotton yarn, in particular, increases the yarn's strength and reduces yarn breaking.

  • Sizing aids in the reduction of yarn hairiness.

  • To increase the total weight of cotton yarn, sodium phosphate is utilized.

  • The yarn's softness will improve due to the usage of a softener.

  • It enhances the ability to warp and makes it more resistant to actions like absorption, friction, tension, etc.

  • It improves fabric quality by reducing hairiness, weakness, and the smoothness and absorbency of yarn.

  • Sizing increases the tensile strength of the yarn.

  • Sizing increases the elasticity of the yarn.

  • Sizing increases the weight of the yarn.

  • Frictional resistance is also increased.

  • The process of Sizing removes projected fibers.

  • The electrostatic formation is also reduced.

These are the advantages that we can benefit from textile sizing.

Now let us take a look at the properties of the sized yarn. When sized ingredients are applied to the yarn, it develops some properties. The properties of the sized yarn are discussed below.

The Properties of Sized Yarn are:

  • It has higher elasticity.

  • Yarn strength is more elevated.

  • Flexibility is low.

  • Elongation is low.

  • Frictional resistance is low.

  • Hairiness is low.

  • Weakness is less.

  • It does not respond to over-drying.

  • It becomes smoother.

Hence with the use of textile sizing chemicals, the physical properties of the yarn undergo changes which are then used for making a weaver's beam.

The process of sizing the textile is also an important part to discuss. So further, we will see the process of textile sizing.

Textile Sizing Process:

Before using the yarn for weaving, it is sized with a sizing machine using textile sizing chemicals. The four sections of a sizing device are the beam creel, size box drying, chamber, and winding head. The following is a description of the textile sizing procedure:

  • Pneumatic warping brakes are installed on the beam supports to attach warp beams to a beam basket. It regulates the warp tension by reducing the warp let-off speed by applying sufficient pressure.

  • The brake device can also rapidly stop the beam from rotating due to inertia.

  • Cooked size solution is pumped into the size box, and application rollers apply the size solution to the yarn. During size application, it's critical to keep the size box's temperature and the yarn's tension under control.

  • The sized yarns are subsequently sent through a series of steamrolls in the drying chamber. The yarn should make good contact with the steamroll surface for a satisfactory drying result.

  • The yarn separation rolls at the front end of the machine divide the warp sheet into individual strands to wound the yarn onto the beam in a regular pattern.

  • The Reed adjusts the width of the warp being wound onto the beam, while the press rollers control the warp density, allowing more yarn to be wound onto it. A stamping device is used to mark the length of the warp. During weaving, this mark assists the operator in cutting the continuous fabric into rolls of the desired size.

  • The machine's front end's control panel may regulate process parameters such as winding speed and tension, moisture level, Creole tension, drying temperature, and size.

This is the technical process of textile sizing. Another essential aspect to consider is which size is suitable for which textile material. Even though you may be using textile sizing chemicals but it is crucial to know which size suits which textiles. So let's check that out.

Size Suitability for Various Textile Materials:

The strains which a textile material goes through in the process of weaving affect them in various ways. Cotton material reacts completely differently than polyester material. Continuous filament yarns are more resistant to weaving stresses because of their greater cohesiveness and filament length continuity.

In such circumstances, the main goal of sizing is to make the yard abrasion resistant than just increasing strength. The textile material is judged more on its toughness than its strength. In this regard, synthetic fibers are favorable. Each form of textile material has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and the sort of size ingredients used to compensate for those disadvantages must be chosen accordingly.

These are the basic things that one should know about textile sizing. This is no detail, but these are the basic things you should know if you happen to be a part of textile sizing. Recently industries have come up producing different textile sizing chemicals required for the Sizing. Textile is an essential part of our daily lives, so this industry continuously innovates new things to cope with trending fashion styles.
